Slack is the general fix
Most ferry mistakes come from a plan with no room in it. A traveler who has a spare afternoon does not need to guess right about the forecast, the timetable changeover, or the walk from the landing. They can be wrong about all three and still enjoy the trip, which is a much easier standard to hit than being right.

- One full spare day before a flight or any fixed commitment.

Understand how safety information moves
It is worth knowing that marine safety information travels through a formal system. The National Weather Service explains that in February 1999 the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System became the primary international means of disseminating Maritime Safety Information to mariners, with the aim of delivering emergency and safety communications and MSI to ships anywhere on the world's oceans regardless of location or atmospheric conditions. Maritime Safety Information covers navigational warnings, meteorological warnings and forecasts, and other urgent safety information. The system's goals are defined in the Safety of Life at Sea convention and apply to vessels over 300 gross tons and to passenger vessels of any size, with the NWS preparing forecasts and warnings for broadcast through the system.
The relevant point for a passenger is the last clause. Passenger vessels of any size are inside that framework, which is part of why a ferry's decisions are made against defined information rather than a phone app.
The lake effect that surprises people
If your route crosses enclosed or semi-enclosed water, one phenomenon deserves a mention. NOAA describes a seiche as a standing wave in which the largest vertical oscillations occur at each end of a body of water while the center point barely moves, similar to a seesaw, and notes that standing waves can form in any enclosed or semi-enclosed body of water, from a massive lake to a coffee cup. Winds and atmospheric pressure can contribute to both seiches and meteotsunamis, though wind is typically more important to a seiche while pressure often plays a substantial role in meteotsunami formation.
For a traveler on a lake or a long enclosed bay, this explains something otherwise baffling: water levels at one end of the lake changing noticeably while the weather where you are standing looks unremarkable.
An unhurried shape
Fix the immovable dates. Place a buffer directly before them. Choose one crossing a day. Book refundable where the route is exposed. Then fill the rest loosely and let the weather decide the order.

Is one spare day really enough? On most routes, yes. On thin winter timetables where sailings run a few days a week, plan for two.
